Kakadu mine now found to be leaking radiation levels 5,400 times background

Water with uranium concentrations 5,400 times background and a cocktail of other radionuclides are seeping from beneath the tailings dam at the Ranger Uranium Mine in Kakadu National Park. According to a press release from the Australian Green Party, the Office of the Supervising Scientist acknowledged to Australian Greens Senator, Scott Ludlam, that the contamination was occurring.

The Ranger uranium mine inside the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park is leaking 100,000 liters of contaminated water into the ground beneath the park every day, a Government appointed scientist has revealed.

On September 4, traditional people rallied to oppose a proposed radioactive waste dump in the Northern Territories. Protests have been on-going against a nuclear waste dump in the NT.
