Nuclear Costs

Estimates for new reactor construction costs continue to sky-rocket. Conservative estimates range between $6 and $12 billion per reactor but Standard & Poor's predicts a continued rise. The nuclear power industry is lobbying for heavy federal subsidization including unlimited loan guarantees but the Congressional Budget Office predicts the risk of default will be well over 50 percent, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. Beyond Nuclear opposes taxpayer and ratepayer subsidies for the nuclear energy industry.

Madigan Faces Mounting Pressure To Step Down

Madigan hasn't been charged with a crime but has been embroiled in charging documents the U.S. Department of Justice secured against ComEd.

Please note that ComEd's parent company, Exelon, is the largest nuclear power utility in the country. In 2016, Exelon received a $2.35 billion bailout, at ratepayer expense, with support from IL House Speaker Michael Madigan. Commonwealth Edison also secured another $750 million, in the form of a rate hike, at ratepayer expense, again with Madigan's support.

Arraignment set for ComEd in bribery case encircling House Speaker Michael Madigan

Class-action suit seeks customer reimbursement from ComEd

The utility agreed to a $200 million fine in a deferred-prosecution deal with the feds. But, so far, those actually damaged in ComEd's admitted bribery scheme—ratepayers—have seen nothing.
