Nuclear Weapons

Beyond Nuclear advocates for the elimination of all nuclear weapons and argues that removing them can only make us safer, not more vulnerable. The expansion of commercial nuclear power across the globe only increases the chance that more nuclear weapons will be built and is counterproductive to disarmament. We also cover nuclear weapons issues on our international site, Beyond Nuclear International.

New Mexico Downwinders Events

Message from Tina Cordova, TBDC (Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium):

It [is] encouraging to see so many people planning to reflect on the Anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  I would never want to take away from admitting and recognizing the suffering of the Japanese people.  I ask though, that as you go about those remembrances  you also remember that before the US government used the bombs against the Japanese people they tested them on American citizens who lived in close proximity to the Trinity test site.  Our lives were changed forevermore and we’ve sacrificed and suffered ever since.  I might also remind you that we had casualties from Trinity and they were our babies (see attached paper).  We cannot forget that the US government has controlled the messaging around what they did here in the US to innocent men, women and children in their rush to Japan.  I would be remiss in not reminding everyone about this truth.

I’ve attached [linked here] the flyer for our upcoming events along with a recently produced 150 mile Trinity radius map for your review and use.  This map is the result of a brilliant young man who attends the University of New Mexico.  He completed this as a class project.  It is one of a kind and completely obliterates the government's perpetual lie that “no one lived here and no one was harmed”.  Indeed we did live here and indeed we were greatly harmed.

If anyone has any questions please let me know.  Otherwise, I offer each of you peace as we traverse the hard days of remembrance that lay ahead of us.

Take care,

Books to read as we commemorate Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 2021

From Joseph Gerson:

Friends,

Two books, memoirs by among the most courageous Hibakusha, provide riveting information about the origins and organizing of the Hibakusha movement:
Burnt Yet Undaunted by Senji Yamaguchi, a lion of the movement, may still be available from Gensuikyo.
The Atomic Bomb on My Back by Taniguchi Sumiteru was published last year here by Rootstock Publishing. (Copies available from Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security at $20 each.)
And, for some of the nasty history, my books With Hiroshima Eyes and Empire and the Bomb: How the U.S. Uses Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World can be found online.

Nuclear Watch South 26th Annual "Seeds of Peace" Nagasaki Day Observance in Atlanta

From Glenn Carroll, Nuclear Watch South:

Hello all!

In Georgia, Nuclear Watch South is coordinating the 26th annual "Seeds of Peace" Nagasaki Day Observance at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta with many co-sponsoring peace groups. We will be on the Georgia Coast for Hiroshima Day for 32nd annual "Lest We Forget" vigil at Kings Bay Trident nuclear submarine base. This year's observance is greatly enhanced by inclusion in Susie King Taylor Institute's annual Mami Wata Conference celebrating the birthday of Susie King Taylor. This teenage Liberty County slave escaped to freedom at age 13, joined the Union Army serving as a nurse on the battlefield and then dedicated herself to teach freed slaves to read. This year's theme is "Susie King Taylor and Sadako Sasaki: Heroines of War and Peace." We will retrace the escape to freedom route before sun-up in Midway, Georgia and then caravan to vigil and have libation ceremony at the gates of Kings Bay, then caravan to St. Simons Island to pay homage to new kiosk dedicated to SKT's natural healing knowledge. These connections and actions are a direct response to the inspiring action of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7.

Peace!
Glenn
