Nuclear Weapons

Beyond Nuclear advocates for the elimination of all nuclear weapons and argues that removing them can only make us safer, not more vulnerable. The expansion of commercial nuclear power across the globe only increases the chance that more nuclear weapons will be built and is counterproductive to disarmament. We also cover nuclear weapons issues on our international site, Beyond Nuclear International.

Join with PSR to commemorate Hiroshima & Nagasaki 75th anniversary

StillHere graphic

Dear Kevin,

Please don't miss an amazing opportunity over the next six days to express your aspirations for a better world. This Thursday and Sunday, there will be over 100 local and national events right here in the USA to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and demand that nuclear weapons are never used again. This will be an unprecedented outpouring of concern amid a pandemic, economic crisis, and national awakening to racial and social justice. Will you participate? And even more importantly—since you already support disarmament—will you convince a friend to participate?

PSR is proud to be part of a wide-ranging coalition of 174 organizations—including 17 PSR chapters and diverse groups such as the Sunrise Movement, Beyond the Bomb, Sierra Club and RootsAction—working together to honor survivors of the bombings—the "Hibakusha"—as we acknowledge that the nuclear weapons, the atomic survivors, and civilization itself are #StillHere.

To get involved, visit the dedicated coalition website.

The coalition is tracking 118 U.S.-based virtual and in-person events in 30 states, and you can get details for all of them on our calendar or the clickable map. To pull this community effort together, the coalition will broadcast a national #StillHere livestream for ten hours on August 6 and seven hours on August 9 to shine a spotlight on creative projects and local events around the country, amplify the voices of activists and hear the stories of downwinders and survivors. At least nine PSR chapters will be represented in segments on the livestream.

You can be part of the solution to ensure nuclear weapons are never used again. Encourage your friends and family to register for the livestream, including through social media using the hashtag #stillhere. We're making it easy for you: to register and for detailed livestream agendas, a clickable map of virtual and in-person events, full calendar listings, downloadable toolkit for social media, the Hibakusha Appeal petition in support of the nuclear weapons ban, and the list of coalition partners:

Visit the #StillHere website: hiroshimanagasaki75.org

My favorite Chinese proverb is this: "If we make no effort to change direction, we will end up where we are headed." Please help PSR fight apathy and demonstrate to decision-makers that our vision of the future must include the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.

  Register for the livestream here

Sincerely,

Martin Fleck
Director, Nuclear Weapons Abolition Program
