Yucca Mountain

Yucca Mountain, the Nevada-based, scientifically flawed and politically unjust proposed high-level radioactive waste repository has now been canceled. However, pro-nuclear forces in Congress have not abandoned Yucca and funding is still allocated to the project.

Yucca Mountain advocates pursue more nuke waste funds

As reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

(Please note -- the Yucca dump scheme  is for permanent disposal, not "storage," as the article reports.)

It is not just the State of Nevada, and the Western Shoshone Indian Nation (and other indigenous peoples, including the Goshutes and Southern Paiutes), but also 1,000+ environmental groups, which have successfully resisted the Yucca dump for 32 years and counting. Here is  partial list:

Yucca dump proponents, like U.S. Reps. Fred Upton (R-MI), Mike Simpson (R-ID), and John Shimkus (R-IL), are essentially saying "Consent-based siting? Screw Nevada!"

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Democratic presidential candidate, expresses opposition to Yucca dump in NV

As reported by the Nevada Independent:

As her Las Vegas visit wrapped up Monday morning, Klobuchar also addressed a very Nevada issue — Yucca Mountain and the controversial secret shipment of plutonium that occurred last year.

Klobuchar said she supports “consent-based decisions” regarding the storage of nuclear waste and condemned the plutonium incident.

“That was outrageous,” she said. “What are we like back in, like, the early days of Siberia or something? That is the exact kind of thing that causes distrust in our government, and the administration should never have let that happen.”
