Lodge serves as legal counsel on behalf of a coalition of seven environmental groups, oppsed to Holtec Internatinal's proposal to "temporarily store" 173,600 metric tons of commercial irradiated nuclear fuel in southeastern New Mexico.

Lodge also submitted EXPERT REPORT AND CURRICULUM VITAE OF ROBERT ALVAREZ in support of the contention.

State sounds alarm over sale of Pilgrim for decommissioning

So many unanswered questions, re: Holtec vis a vis the Pilgrim decommissioning in MA, should cause alarm in NM re: Holtec's CISF (centralized interim storage facility) scheme.

Hello:

Today, Pilgrim Watch filed a Motion to Intervene [linked here] in the request for license transfer from Entergy to Holtec International.

As described in the Federal Register, 84, No. 21, January 31, 2019, the NRC is considering whether to approve the transfers of Renewed Facility Operating License No. DPR–35 for Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (Pilgrim) and the general license for Pilgrim Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) from the current licensees to Holtec International and Holtec Decommissioning International, LLC.

We established standing and filed two contentions.

Contention 1. The Applicant’s LTA does not provide the required financial assurance.  It does not show that either HDI or Holtec Pilgrim is financially responsible, or that either has or has access to adequate funds for decommissioning.   Neither does the LTA provide any reasonable assurance that Holtec Pilgrim and HDI have, or will have, the financial resources required to deal with environmental impacts that would place the public health, safety, and the environment at risk.

Contention 2. The license transfer and amendment request does not include the environmental report required by 10 CFR 51.53(d), and has not undergone the environmental review required by the National Environmental Policy Act.

Last, we also petitioned to ADOPT in full measure the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Contentions I and II as stated and together with all supporting argument and evidence by reference. Should the state, for any reason, have to drop either of these contentions, Pilgrim Watch requests to take the contentions forward.

"La Fuga Radiactiva (The Radioactive Leak)," a 30-minute Spanish drama about a CISF disaster

Eduardo Soto from Spain is the director of the short (30-minute) fictional drama, "The Radioactive Leak."

[But it is inspired by real life events, namely...]

In 2010, the small town of Villar de Cañas, 40 km away from the provincial capital of Cuenca, Spain, was designated as the site for the construction of a Centralized Temporary Storage Facility (CTS -- these days referred to as CISF, Centralized Interim Storage Facility, in the U.S.) which was to house the high-level nuclear waste from seven active nuclear power plants in Spain.

The anti-CTS Platform brought together a large team of activists that neutralized the development of the works for 8 years, with peaceful protests, with information, with the law.

In 2018 "La Fuga Radiactiva" ("The Radioactive Leak") was filmed to stage a radioactive future that we don't want for Cuenca. Or for anyone.

What events would happen in the case of an accident in highly radioactive waste storage facility? In the film we see this critical and anguished situation from the point of view of various characters. Their reactions inform us about such aspects of nuclear energy that aren't usually discussed in public forums. It's a thriller to make us think over the form of energy that we want to move the world.

We made the short film La Fuga Radiactiva (The Radioactive Leak) after 8 years of resistance, struggle and information against the building of the CTS 40 km away from the town of of Cuenca. We had gone through stages of euphoria and stages of discouragement. We were aware that our messages only reached mailboxes and brains of a faithful, tight audience and that there was no need to convince anyone, they were already so persuaded that they no longer responded to the calls. It's exhausting to fight with a sling against a power that does not cease to feed its troops, improve its armament and multiply their means and strategies. We were tired and we needed to present news and data under a new format. 

The Radioactive Leak has been more than a short film since the first day of its production, demonstrating its ability to rekindle the flame of conscious activism.
