4/29/20: Beyond Nuclear on Sputnik Radio's "Loud & Clear"

Wednesday’s regular segment, Beyond Nuclear, is about nuclear issues, including weapons, energy, waste, and the future of nuclear technology in the United States. Kevin Kamps, the Radioactive Waste Watchdog at the organization Beyond Nuclear, and Sputnik news analyst and producer Nicole Roussell, join the show.

This week's episode includes a focus on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission commissioners' sudden rejection of Beyond Nuclear, and others', appeals against the Holtec International irradiated nuclear fuel consolidated interim storage facility in New Mexico. (This part of the interview can be found bookended from the 20 minute 50 second, to the 22 minute 45 second, marks on the audio recording.

(By the way, Kevin found his calculator!

Regarding the hazardous persistence of high-level radioactive waste, there are 100,000 decades in a million years!

And regarding the enormity of the old reactor bailouts approved thus far in the U.S. ($11+ billion worth in just NY, IL, and PA alone), that adds up to 1,105 X $10 million.

This is in the context of The Hill newspaper article, discussed in this interview, that seriously -- by several orders of magnitude -- underreported the persistence of radioactive waste's hazard, as well as the scale of old reactor bailouts in the U.S.)
