Opposition mounts against Holtec International/Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance scheme for de facto permanent surface storage of 173,600 metric tons of highly radioactive irradiated nuclear fuel in southeastern New Mexico:

TAKOMA PARK, MD -- As a courtesy, Beyond Nuclear is sharing a MOTION, filed by Fasken Oil and Ranch, and Permian Basin Land and Royalty Owners, posted online here. The MOTION was filed today in the Holtec/ELEA consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) license application proceeding before the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. Robert V. Eye of Lawrence, KS serves as Fasken and PBLRO legal counsel. Like Fasken, and PBLRO, Beyond Nuclear is an official party in opposition to the Holtec/ELEA proposal. Beyond Nuclear's legal counsel are Diane Curran of Washington, D.C., and Mindy Goldstein of Atlanta, GA. So too are Sierra Club, the largest and oldest environmental organization in the U.S. (represented by legal counsel Wally Taylor of Cedar Rapds, IA), as well as a seven-group, nationwide, grassroots environmetal coalition ("Don't Waste Michigan, et al.," represented by legal counsel Terry Lodge of Toledo, OH). As with the highly controversial Yucca Mountain, Nevada permanent disposal scheme, the TX and/or NM CISFs, if licensed, constructed, and operated, would launch unprecedented thousands, or even tens of thousands, of shipments of high-level radioactive waste, lasting decades. Shipments, by road, rail, and barge, would pass through most states, many major cities, and the vast majority of U.S. congressional districts (see 2017 documents). The high risks have led to opponents long dubbing such shipments "Mobile Chernobyls," "Floating Fukushimas," and "Dirty Bombs on Wheels."
