These Oct. 9 responses and answers, by NRC staff and Holtec, are in reply to CISF opponents' filings of Sept. 14th. A broad coalition legally intervened in opposition to Holtec's CISF. Holtec and NRC staff had 25 days to respond. Now oppoents to the CISF have just 7 days to respond to Holtec and NRC's filings of Oct. 9th.

Halt WCS! Get Your Public Comments in by NOVEMBER 19th

Now is the time to submit your comments to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) about the proposed Waste Control Specialists/Interim Storage Partners/Orano project to bring 40,000 metric tons of commercial high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants located across the country to a site in west Texas, five miles east of Eunice, New Mexico.  If this sounds familiar, it is.  Just three months ago public comments were due to the NRC about a similar proposal by Holtec International.  Yes, southeast New Mexico and west Texas are being targeted by the nuclear industry with two proposed facilities within forty miles of one another.  Comments are due by Friday, October 19th.  https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/09/13/2018-19928/interim-storage-partners-llcs-consolidated-interim-spent-fuel-storage-facility-correction

Thousands of New Mexicans have empathically stated that they do not consent to New Mexico becoming a national radioactive waste dumping ground for high-level waste.  In fact, more than 30,000 comments from people across the nation were submitted in opposition to the Holtec proposal.

Waste Control Specialists, a limited liability corporation, is asking NRC for a 40-year license to temporarily store the waste in Andrews County, Texas, with an opportunity to extend the license to 120 years.

You were instrumental in helping stall a proposed nuclear waste dump in Texas.

Unfortunately, the same dangerous plan by the same corporate actors is back.

Tell the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that you oppose the latest version of the corporate scheme to dump nuclear waste in Texas.

Submit a comment to the agency now.

In addition to putting Texans at risk, this plan would transport 40,000 tons of lethal waste through our major cities by rail — close to homes, schools and businesses.

If allowed to go forward, the plan also would:

• Undermine federal efforts to develop a new, less risky approach to radioactive waste storage and disposal.

• Remove incentives to find a permanent solution to our waste crisis — putting Texas at risk of becoming an unsafe de facto dump site for the country.

• Saddle millions of Americans with the financial and health risks associated with transporting toxic waste.

That’s why Public Citizen and our allies are calling on the NRC to reject this bad proposal — once and for all.
