New nuclear power plant planned for Suffolk coast would be devastating for wildlife

EDF wants to plow ahead (literally) with its #SizewellC nuclear reactor plan on the Suffolk, UK coast (to be built on the beach virtually at sea level during a time of erosion and climate crisis), which would tear up and permanently destroy precious wildlife habitat. Please help our friends in Suffolk stop it. Go here for more information and to find out how you can help stop it. And see our article about this: https://bit.ly/3cm09ab and handbook on Nuclear Power and Harm to Animals, Wild and Domestic: https://bit.ly/3dmPGfT

Nuclear deregulation threatens workers at Pennsylvania plants and nationwide

Paul Gunter and Linda Pentz Gunter authored an oped (with the above headline) published today by the Philadelphia Inquirer, which takes the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to task for, on the one hand, allowing nuclear plant owners to avoid essential safety checks, to extend working hours to 86-hour weeks and to reduce staffing -- all due to the Covid-19 crisis; and, on the other hand, packing nuclear sites with upwards of 1,800 people to conduct refueling operations so closed plants can quickly be brought back on line to eliminate economic losses. Limerick (pictured) in Pennsylvania, was one such plant refueled where workers said they were "terrified" by the overcrowded conditions while the coronavirus continued to spread. The safety of workers and communities should not be compromised to serve a financially failing industry's bottom line, especially in a time of pandemic. Read the full article.

Sign to stop ocean dumping of radioactive water at Fukushima!

The Japanese government intends to release 1.2 million cubic meters of water contaminated with radioiodine, radiocesium, radiostrontium and tritium into the ocean. This water, which exceeds emission concentration standards, has been accumulating since the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdowns and explosions in 2011. Yet more contaminated water will likely be dumped from the ruined reactor sites in the future. Japan civil society groups and Fukushima fishing unions are strongly opposed to ocean discharge. For the fishing industry, this is a matter of life and death.
