After Fukushima explosions, health impacts continue to surface

A recently hosted conference and unrelated published paper each highlight impacts of radiation exposure during early life. At the "5th International Expert Symposium in Fukushima on Radiation and Health" held in Fukushima City, Japan, an increase of thyroid cancers among children was blamed on overdiagnosis and increased screening. However, when examining the cancer cases in detail, most had invaded other places like lungs, lymph nodes and trachea. This indicates that their surgical removal was medically necessary -- not a result of overdiagnosis or screening. Thanks to Fukushima Voice for translating information from this conference and assessing the data.

In areas contaminated with radioactive substances from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, perinatal mortality started to increase after the releases began despite a previous downward trend. These results are consistent with findings in Europe after Chernobyl. The researchers suggest "intensified research" is urgently needed on the association of natural and artificial environmental radiation with detrimental genetic health effects at the population level.

Indigenous Peoples Condemn Nuclear Colonialism on 'Columbus' Day

Ian Zabarte, Native Community Action CouncilBeyond Nuclear was honored and privileged to take part in the Native American Forum on Nuclear Issues held at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) on October 10-11, Indigenous Peoples Day. The powerful event was organized by Ian Zabarte (photo, right) of the Native Community Action Council (NCAC). Speakers from indigenous rights and environmental groups from throughout the US condemned nuclear colonialism, from uranium mining, milling, and processing, to atomic power and nuclear weapons, to radioactive waste -- all of which disproportionately impacts Native Americans and other indigenous peoples, an environmental injustice. NCAC issued a press release, including photos from, and the video recording of, a press conference. More

Stop new nuclear bomb – B61-12 – for Europe! Sign solidarity statement!

Germany's Non-Violent Action for Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, as well as Nukewatch of Wisconsin, are calling for supporters in the U.S. and other countries to print up hard copies of solidarity statements, fill them out, sign them, and mail them in to the groups. They are protesting the development of a modified B61 nuclear bomb, designated Mod-12, which would have new military capabilities. A coalition of 50 groups, including International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, have also launched the "Büchel is everywhere - nuclear-free now!" campaign (see the website here). The coalition has announced a series of non-violent direct actions in 2017 at the German Air Force Base, Büchel, where around 20 U.S. nuclear weapons remain, decades after the end of the Cold War, not to mention U.S. and German ratification of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Media coverage of the commemoration of 50 years since the Fermi 1 "We Almost Lost Detroit" partial meltdown/close call with radioactive catastrophe

“To the village square we must carry the facts of atomic energy. From there must come America’s voice.” --- Albert Einstein, June 1946. Photo credit: Mark Muhich, Sierra Club MI Chapter Nuclear-Free CommitteeA column in the LA Times, and an article in the Detroit Free Press, have covered this story. So too has the Monroe Evening News (note the one-minute video, of UCS's Dave Lochbaum explaining how a supposed meltdown mitigation safeguard at Fermi 1, actually led the meltdown); Michigan Public Radio's Stateside (an eight-minute interview with Fermi watchdog Michael Keegan); and the Toledo Blade.

Beyond Nuclear also raised the Fermi 1 meltdown on Thom Hartmann's "The Big Picture" on Oct. 6th (see from 45 minutes 00 seconds to 52 minutes 20 seconds).

The speakers at the downtown Monroe, MI press conference held at 3:09 PM, Wed., Oct. 6th -- the 50-year mark, to the moment, of the Fermi 1 meltdown -- included (from left to right, see photo): Terry Lodge, Toledo Safe Energy Coalition, and environmental intervention attorney against Fermi 2 & Fermi 3; Jessie Collins, Citizens Resistance at Fermi Two (CRAFT); Michael Keegan, Coalition for a Nuclear-Free Great Lakes and Don't Waste MI (speaking); Ethyl Rivera, Alliance to Halt Fermi 3; Paul Gunter, Beyond Nuclear; and David Lochbaum, Union of Concerned Scientists.

See Beyond Nuclear comprehensive post about the "We Almost Lost Detroit" meltdown 50-year commemoration, including a large number of links to additional information and documentation.
